Add tongue scraping first in your morning routine
You know how your tongue feels kind of yukky when you wake up in the morning. Maybe you rush to brush your teeth before you have to talk to anyone. In Ayurveda, that coating on your tongue is important for evaluating your state of wellness. The coating itself is called ama, which essentially means toxins, and you don’t want to leave it on the tongue. In fact, you don’t want to eat or drink anything in the morning until you’ve gotten rid of the ama. That’s where tongue scraping comes in.
Get a tongue scraper
It’s time to get yourself a tongue scraper. The best ones are either stainless steel or copper. Personally, I recommend stainless as many people already have sufficient copper in their systems. You can get one from most of the main Ayurvedic wellness sites like Banyan Botanicals.
How to use it
When you first get up, before water or coffee (so you don’t swallow the bacteria), go to the bathroom and scrape your tongue. Start as far back on the tongue as you feel comfortable and gently scrape forward. Scrape each side and the middle, rinsing between scrapes. Rinse your mouth and you’re done. You’ll likely notice that the amount of coating begins to decrease over time. Your breath will be sweeter as bacteria have been reduced and it may also impact your digestion for the better.
Information packed
Believe it or not, the coating (ama) on your tongue can tell you a lot about how your digestion is functioning and what type of upsets might be occurring. But that’s the subject for another blog.
Try it and let me know how you like it.
